Terminology→Trinary and ternary
Could a native speaker of English explain differences between terms "trinary" and "ternary". Google does not given a translation of trinary, but translates "ternary" as "троичный". ABBYY Lingvo does the same
Serg,
Opinions
001 I am a native speaker.
Ternary and trinary mean exactly the same thing in daily use, but the correct word is ternary.
"Trinary" is not a real word and appears to have been invented because it sounds like "binary". Many words in English use the prefix "tri-" to indicate three, with the prefix "ter-" being less common.
A native English speaker with a small vocabulary would be able to guess the meaning of "trinary", but they would have more trouble with "ternary".002 Thanks a lot for comments
003 Ahh I did not know that, thanks for the info.
I always preferred trinary myself.
